Kahn't renovate? Then replicate – Ahmedabad Mirror
In what is being seen as a meeting to pacify aggrieved alumni, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) chairman Pankaj Patel on Sunday discussed the premier B-school’s move to revamp infrastructure at its red-brick campus designed by well-known American architect Louis Kahn.
Patel as head of the Board of Governors at IIMA is believed to have brought a consensus among an estimated 25 alumni, who attended the meeting in person, and over 100 alumni who marked their online presence. The consensus is to replicate the Louis Kahn buildings to match the original design characteristics, thereby giving a conditional nod to IIMA’s plan to demolish the iconic six-decades-old Kahn buildings in its old campus.
However, the replication was considered the last option and it was agreed to explore all possible options to restore and renovate Kahn buildings to save IIMA’s heritage campus.
The meeting titled Interaction on Future of IIMA Infrastructure – A discussion with the IIMA Community was held at the institute’s RJ Mathai Auditorium.
Those who attended the meeting strongly opined that the redevelopment of the Kahn buildings must not be on the lines of IIMA’s new campus across the road- a ‘lifeless’ exposed concrete.
The alumnus said even after looking at all available options if it is not feasible to restore the buildings, then the replica of the Kahn buildings at the same premises should be undertaken at the old premises.
A presentation from the IIT- Roorkee team also spoke of the danger of Kahn building in its present form and its susceptibility to earthquakes.
